Google SearchWiki enables fully personalised search

Google have released a new tool named "SearchWiki" to allow signed in users to organise and amend the natural search rankings based upon their own preferences. Google users will also be able to share their website rankings with other SearchWiki users.

See the video below from on of Google's lead boffin, Amay.

Google are claiming this initially will not effect the way natural search appears for users which are not logged in - but I trust that will not stop SEO agencies and consultants from negatively scoring their clients competitors and for that matter merchants and affiliates with their sites.

This really will mean soon that no search result is the same to different users and will surely be a nightmare for SEO agencies to benchmark the search engine rankings - when their clients top customers therefore have the ability to customise and personalise their search results how they would like to have them ranked and alter these day by day.

I've just been having a play myself under searches for this blog

Google SearchWiki

I've vainly just boosted my own blog and also made a slightly biased comment! : )

Celebrity Jewellery PR endorsement!

I recently met an old friend of mine that used to work from a Direct Marketing Agency when I was at Hotel Chocolat. Well, she is definitely using all the skills and techniques she passed on during those days as she has set up an web start up, KendiJewlz.com

KendiJewlz.com specialised in personalised (not personalized) jewellery and have a fabulous range of necklaces, bracelets and earrings that can each be customised.

Sarah Harding wearing her celebrity personalised necklace

Okay plug over, but when I met her she mentioned that she had sent a few samples to the management of Girls Aloud – amazingly lead Girls Aloud socialite Sarah Harding did not only wear the item but she was snapped by the paparazzi! What a fantastic PR coup!

Above's the picture of Sarah Harding wearing her personalised Kendi Jewlz necklace! Best of luck to KendiJewlz in the future – let’s hope some more strong PR ensures plenty of visits and sales to the site!

Word to PDF converter

Evening all

Now I admit this isn't groundbreaking but today I wasted about 30minutes or so trying to a free find, install and run an application to allow me to convert a Microsoft Word doc file into an Adobe PDF.

Various different versions appeared when Goolging for "word to PDF converter" and the majority are FREE trial therefore once downloaded and you print your word file it results with a "TRIAL VERSION" plastered all over your PDF or "CALL TOLL FREE for FULL VERSION".

After a bit of trial and error until I found cutepdf.com - where I have now sucessfully downloaded the application and it runs and works fantastically well and I am now able to create PDF's from Microsoft Word by file ->- print and then selecting cutepdf writer.

Word to PDF converter

Thank you cutepdf.com, no thanks to the following http://www.doc2pdf.net/, http://www.primopdf.com/, http://www.pdfonline.com/, http://www.word-to-pdf.com/, Universal Document Converter, Virtual PDF printer

A4Uexpo Presentation - Securing Buy-in for your Affiliate Marketing budget

I've just blogged about last week's A4Uexpo 2008 held in London well here is the uploaded presentation I ran with Daniel Powel (Head of Account Management, CJ) and Chris King (Head of Affiliates, BT).

Introduced and chaired by Dan, Chris kicked off the hour with his tips and techniques to please your sales and marketing director with his experiences whilst running the BT affiliate marketing programme including an aggressive stance to PPC and ensuring they own the "broadband" keyword terms - whether themselves or their affiliates. He went on to speak about how he has modelled affiliates internally at BT using his "Heinekein Affect".

Chris then passed the baton over to myself were I spoke about techniques to guarantee buy in from your finance director, especially in todays recession climate - tips on how to articulate the reduced risk of this channel but ensuring you have set the correct strategies to scale your programme post launch, set a budget but allow this to grow!

I also discuss how you can utilise certain affiliate models such as the voucher and deal sites to sell or merchandise certain offers on your site you do not necessarily want on your homepage, or managinng communication with voucher or discount sites to drive volume to either hot products or those unsold in your warehouse.

The end of my session was advice and techniques to achieve buy in for the Creative Directors. I explained the story of how asseenonscreen.com or more commonly now known as ASOS.com built its business and brand via affiliate marketing and understanding the ways to build a similar brand with this channel and the reach affiliate marketing can generate to your site and company - with a great screenshot from Google Trends with visitor numbers from a popular voucher code site and a deptartment store not currently undertaking in affiliate marketing - the graph speaks for itself.

I hope you enjoy the virtual presentation, especially for those who could not attend A4Uexpo. Any questions or comments please feel free to add below and I'll reply.

A4Uexpo London 2008

Last week I attended the annual A4Uexpo in London hosted by Existem the creators of the popular affiliate community forum affiliates4U.com (formally a4uforum). This was a two day event with a vast host of influential affiliate speakers and from other online channels. The event was kicked off by affiliates4u founder, Matt Wood and keynote from Michael Nutley from NMA.

A4Uexpo London 2008

I managed to catch a couple of the presentations during the morning and afternoon in between publisher meetings. Keith Budden and Mark Russell hosted an interesting session on effective communication with your affiliate base which set the basics and common issues with driving your programme, some good affiliate tips and advice passed on.

The last session I managed to catch in the mid afternoon was an extreme SEO session. After spending 20minutes before this session with a true PPC expert, the session really delivered the key differences in natural search versus paid. Paid search is truly a science of mathematics – true and firm understand of the key metrics to drive the right amount of clicks at an acceptable ROI (return on investment) – it is pure data mining for guys who love excel and macros!
Extreme SEO session at A4Uexpo LONDON
Natural search you will find a far more creative search technician – Dave Naylor, Joost de Valk and Marcus Tandler (Mediadonis) made the hour session fly by with a plethora of hints and tips with an aggressive spin on the old black hat SEO ways to blacklist and decrease your competitors SEO rankings and also great discussion as ever on the means and ways on link building and link buying – from old school ethical sources to the bulk and the various text link brokers.

Chaotic but a truly great session, with plenty of value if you could keep up with the Kronenberg fueled banter and various ways to both upset and please Matt Cutts from Google!

Speaker Event - Securing buy in for your Affiliate Marketing programme
Earlier in the year I was approach by Matt Wood to speak at A4Uexpo with a twist on securing buy in for your Affiliate Marketing programme. Chaired by Daniel Powell (Head of Account Management, CJ), Chris King (Head of Affiliates, BT) and ran an hour presentation on securing that affiliate budget, aimed at advertisers and agency staff.
A4Uexpo - Affiliate Marketing Speaker Event
We pitched the talk on hitting each director within an organisation and the different tactics to make sure you can set up and run your programme but more importantly also ensure you can competitively scale the affiliate channel. Chris ran through pleasing the Sales & Marketing directors whilst my focus was more on guarantee both your Commercial Director and the Creative Director are happy and comfortable with the reach and branding of your business. I've just uploaded the how to get buy in for your affiliate programme here.

After the event we where whisked away for a cruise on the London Thames, with a 3 hour cruise on the Silver Sturgeon – this was a great networking exercise and I managed to catch up with various agencies, networks and affiliates.

Congratulations to Matt and the whole team behind A4Uexpo – a fantastic affiliate marketing event and great excuse to round up the most influential people in the industry over a two day period.

Affiliate podcast with affiliateblog.co.uk

Running around from meeting to meeting last month I recorded a podcast interview with Fraser Edwards from Affiliateblog.co.uk. Fraser’s had been trying to catch up with me for a while to discuss varying topics on affiliate marketing. My move to House of Fraser brought forward a fantastic opportunity to sit down and fix a time however with both our schedules and with one thing and another, this took nearly 5 months!

I’m happy to say my podcast is now live on affiliate blog, where I discuss with Fraser my background to affiliate marketing, how I’ve moved from publisher, to affiliate network and now advertisers formally with Hotel Chocolat and now House of Fraser.

Chris Bishop speaks to Fraser Edwards at Affiliateblog.co.uk

I tried to steer the podcast to affiliate marketing advice actually for the merchants but also a steer to affiliates themselves.

Again, you can find the podcast here – http://www.affiliateblog.co.uk/chris-bishop-house-of-fraser-podcast.html

Please add some comments on Fraser’s blog and I will go in and reply next week.

Thank you to Fraser for conducting the interview.

Ad:Tech London 2008

Just a very quick post to say it was great catching up with so many people at last weeks Ad:Tech in Olympia, London. There was a fantastic turn out on both days to the event and I personally enjoyed the conference sessions I attended on the Thursday.

Ad Tech London 2008

On the Thursday morning I hosted an Affiliate Marketing Roundtable which as the bill suggested was an intimate discussion group focusing on all things affiliate marketing - from setting up an affiliate programme, devising a commission and communication strategy to implementing incentives and ultimately hitting sales targets for the channel.

Ad Tech London 2008

I have another speaker event towards the end of October, I'll be at A4UExpo 2008 - I'll be updating my blog with preview content to the discussion on achieving management buy in to affiliate marketing.

Thanks, Chris

Sissy Moany Arsenal Football Club

Don’t get me wrong – I completely admire Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal for the way the play attractive football. They were completely the deserving winners in a great game at the Reebok.

Arsenal need to remember that however they pass the ball around they are playing in a competitive league, playing in a league where tackling is allowed, even a contact sport. They do not have a given right not to be tackled.

But what has completely got on my goat is that way Gael Clichy, Kolo Toure et al have come out and disgracefully slated Kevin Davies. The Wanderers number 9 is argueably the most honest player in the Premiership and constantly the most fouled year on the year in the league.

Honest Kevin Davies

Minutes before half-time Davies tackled Gael Clichy completely fairly – he played the full ball but his momentum meant he caught the French full back. Davies, a player who has played on with a broken hand and even a broken foot during last seasons Premiership and FA Cup. Gael went down as if he had been shot!

Sissy Clichy goes down as if he has been shot!

His then over protective boyfriends (Fabregas, Toure) then confronted him and waived imagery red cards at the referee to take action – obviously not one of the players saw Davies win the ball clearly! They’d rather play their French violins to the tune of how hard done by they are when they play away! The referee under this pressure issued Davies a yellow card, for fairly tackling an opposition player! Madness!

Postmatch – Bendtner came out with a slanderous comment about the tackle being a “lunge” and Kevin aiming to hurt the player and then in the same sentence he admitted he didn’t even see it! Christ sake then soft lad, keep your mouth shout.

Limping centre-half Kolo Toure has slammed Davies …

''The tackle was a disgrace - very bad,' 'There is no place for that in football”

''I have nothing against Kevin Davies, he seems a good guy. But he uses his elbows far too much”.

He got the ball – fair and square – even the muppet Mark Lawrenson agreed it was infact a fair challenge and commented that Arsenal and Clichy are a team of sissies!

So after all this debate, anger and slander from the Arse you’d expect the lad to of broke his leg, or be in fact injured they’d have a leg to stand on (haha) but no, the poor French youngster has a bruise! A bruise FFS! You soft fairy!

This is England, this in the English Premiership, this is a contact sport! The spoon fed Gael wants to try and play Sunday League football, taking a few bruises is considered a result when playing the Red Lion from Aspull, Wigan!

Arsenal – hats off to you for your exciting football, but don’t forget this is a game, a competition and one which the opposition can attempt to take the ball off you!

Affiliate Advice - How to sell film merchandise tshirts

Okay, here is the latest affiliate site review - this time it is fashion blogger designerlabels.org.uk.

Designer labels are one of a growing number of fashion blogs to post about new fashion trends and new labels for menswear and womenswear online. Due to the ease of blog publishing now with blogger.com and Wordpress an increasing amount of affiliates are building both generic and niche blogs with affiliate links behind them.

As ever with SEO, content is king, and especially fresh new original content – and that has to be the main mission and objective for content or blog affiliates – hitting unique content and supplemented with solid internal and external link building campaign the publisher can find themselves with a very popular and highly valuable site.

FCUK Batman blog listing
After speaking to the publisher online on instant messenger we discussed the various long tail areas of the House of Fraser menswear department to drive incremental visits to both sites.

Designer Labels Batman dark knight tshirt blog post

The publisher identified the French Connection Batman t-shirts as an opportunity for his site and here is his fashion blog post - http://designerlabels.org.uk/mens/french-connection-mens/batman-t-shirts-at-french-connection/

Here you can see a strong URL fully optimised for the search engines and a basic introductory copy with then product image and brief description all deep linking to a “batman” internal search page on the House of Fraser.

The brief copy for the posting and the product helps set the scene and will also the search engines to pick up the content theme however, I feel the publisher could produce a more interactive and compelling post around this subject to drive more visitors to the page and earn themselves more commission.

Affiliate Advice Suggestions
Blockbuster mentality! – Think like the marketers in Hollywood and build out the Batman promotion!

- Introductory Copy – Always aim for at least a paragraph of initial text to assist the user. Utilise the hype and interest in the movie by providing further statistics on the film, film plot, actors etc to drive more qualified traffic to the site.
- Interactivity – Help whip up some excitement – include either some images of the movie (with alt tags – utilise Google image search – to drive more visitors!) or why not include an embedded YouTube video – maybe the trailer for the movie
- Product Price – Always include the product price when you have this – gives the visitor fuller information and reduces the bounce rate on the merchants’ site.
- Call to action/Site to buy – Include a clear call to action with each product, “Buy this t-shirt for £25 at House of Fraser”. A clearer call to action will ensure a higher click through rate and by providing the end site will build confidence with the visitor so they are aware of the next step to their purchase.
- Personal Recommendation – Question to the affiliate? Which is your favourite t-shirt and why? This is fantastic subjective and unique comments for your post, aiding the user to choose but also allowing people to debate in the blog post comments and also to viral to their friends to debate.
- Social bookmarks – Adding social bookmarks always the user to share with the various popular social networking sites such as Facebook (see below for a Facebook opportunity)
- Show scarcity of products – “Buy now” “Only 5 ranges remaining” “Act now to buy your Batman tee”, People want what they think they can't have and social psychology would indicate that loss is a more powerful emotion than gain
- Delivery information – Simple comment to statement the merchants delivery information, especially to state choose next day delivery information and you can have this tomorrow

User and authentic blogger persuasion is a fantastic tool for content affiliates – adding one or two of these suggestions should ensure the post is found by more visitors in the search engines or via links from their friends and then drive the click through rate and conversion rate.

Happy affiliate – Higher SERP’s, more traffic, higher CTR/CR – more commission!

Facebook Opportunity
Utilise the cult following of the Dark Knight film and seed links to the blog post on forums and social networking groups.

Below is a screenshot of one of the plethora of Dark Knight groups on Facebook, with 40k users and hourly engagement this is a fantastic traffic source and a great place for debate “this is my favourite t-shirt etc…”.
Facebook Dark Knight fan group - use to sell Batman tshirts

However, do be careful not to over commit or spam these social networking and forum posts.

Any comments or quesitons please list below.

Thanks, Chris

Ps. If you are looking for French Connection Batman t-shirts please visit the blog mentioned or here via the House of Fraser website.

The first is with Ad:Tech London, on Thursday, 25th September

Chris Bishop speaking at Ad:Tech London

Its the final countdown

Earlier this month I spammed you with news of my alcohol abstinence for July, and I can not tell you how long July has slowly passed by!

Going into the last day of my booze deprived month and I am still going strong as are the sales of OJ, Cranberry Juice and Coca-Cola in and around the pubs and clubs of Baker Street/Farringdon.

Can I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and especially those that donated – So far I’ve managed to raise a massive £415 for a Bolton Children’s Hospice – who have been in touch to wish me well and to thank you all.

So only 14 hours to go!!! – That first pint when I land in Portugal is going to taste amazing, as in the second, third…

Thank you all again…

URL duplication – Canonicalization

As advanced has we have all become with our search engine marketing strategies many websites both large and small are still making basic errors which can fundamentally effect their search engine rankings.

URL duplication is still a very common error to which Google still throwns upon. Canonicalization (Google term!) is the process of Google picking the best url when there are several choices, and it usually refers to home pages. For example, most people would consider these the same urls:

http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/
http://houseoffraser.co.uk/
http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/on/demandware.store/Sites-hof-Site/default/Default-Start

URL duplication – Canonicalization do not let this effect your website, search engine marketing strategies
Surely all the same site? Or are they? Don't let URL duplication effect your SERPs.

But technically all of these urls are different. A web server could return completely different content for all the urls above. This was the issue with the House of Fraser site until we correctly 301 re-directed the URLs to the root homepage URL.

Website owners need to ensure all internal links to the homepage are set to the root URL, therefore Google can correctly assign the authority/rank of the site to one single page rather than spreading the link creditability to a mixture of sites. Google does this as it sees various sites which appear the same, potential copy-cat sites. As Google can not decide who the authority of the given subject is, it simply shares the rank up by each player – if you own both the sites, you are therefore decreasing your rank due to poor website SEO housekeeping.

Tip. The classic is always your logo – make sure this isn’t going to xyz.com/index.html

Any questions or comments please do let below and do look out for further search engine marketing tidbits.
Chris

A good way to promote sale!

Readers of my blog and House of Fraser affiliates will be aware we are currently in our Summer SALE with up to 70% off online and we have seen fantastic sales uplift from our affiliates.

Placements of our SALE creative and supportive copy have aided the spike however, online publishers that go the extra mile will always see high conversion rates.

Take the new House of Fraser affiliate – Give or Take, and their blog announcement that House of Fraser is now live - they have initially utilised our introductionary blerb supportive copy provided via both our affiliate networks - not just leaving it there - to maximise the current House of Fraser SALE they have cleverly then hand picked several SALE products across womenswear and menswear via product shots.

Affiliate Site Review - Give or Take, new House of Fraser affiliate Give or Take annoucement to their user base and taking advantage of the House of Fraser sale

Call to action!
Using the product screenshots Give or Take have also referenced the featured products with the previous price (clever use of strike through) and the now SALE price.
Affiliate Site Review - Listing featured products - however, where are the deeplinks?

Affiliate 2.0
Give or Take is currently utlising techniques coined under web 2.0; allowing the user to comment on the blog post and therefore engage in conversation and also bookmark to popular social networking sites such as delicious, facebook, reddit.

Affiliate Site Review - Utlise Social Networking Tools and promote viral marketing

Overal a nice article post for an affiliate to introduce there customer base to House of Fraser however, I do think there are a few tweaks to aid to the user and drive those conversion rates ups.

Recommendations
1 - Sign up - The Give or Take site is a members site, the blog post should reference to sign up for the site.
2 - Deeplink - With the recommended products - send the traffic straight to the related product.
3 - Call to action - The use of a call to action graphic would increase the conversion rate (naturally keep to the look and feel of the site).
4 - Alt tags - Google Images has now overtaking MSN and Yahoo in the search market share in the UK. Give or Take has placed House of Fraser products without the use of an alt tags - maximise this oppourtunity and traffic source whilst also aiding partial sighted net users.

If you'd like to nominate your site for a review please contact me.
