Word to PDF converter

Evening all

Now I admit this isn't groundbreaking but today I wasted about 30minutes or so trying to a free find, install and run an application to allow me to convert a Microsoft Word doc file into an Adobe PDF.

Various different versions appeared when Goolging for "word to PDF converter" and the majority are FREE trial therefore once downloaded and you print your word file it results with a "TRIAL VERSION" plastered all over your PDF or "CALL TOLL FREE for FULL VERSION".

After a bit of trial and error until I found cutepdf.com - where I have now sucessfully downloaded the application and it runs and works fantastically well and I am now able to create PDF's from Microsoft Word by file ->- print and then selecting cutepdf writer.

A4Uexpo Presentation - Securing Buy-in for your Affiliate Marketing budget

I've just blogged about last week's A4Uexpo 2008 held in London well here is the uploaded presentation I ran with Daniel Powel (Head of Account Management, CJ) and Chris King (Head of Affiliates, BT).

Introduced and chaired by Dan, Chris kicked off the hour with his tips and techniques to please your sales and marketing director with his experiences whilst running the BT affiliate marketing programme including an aggressive stance to PPC and ensuring they own the "broadband" keyword terms - whether themselves or their affiliates. He went on to speak about how he has modelled affiliates internally at BT using his "Heinekein Affect".

Chris then passed the baton over to myself were I spoke about techniques to guarantee buy in from your finance director, especially in todays recession climate - tips on how to articulate the reduced risk of this channel but ensuring you have set the correct strategies to scale your programme post launch, set a budget but allow this to grow!

I also discuss how you can utilise certain affiliate models such as the voucher and deal sites to sell or merchandise certain offers on your site you do not necessarily want on your homepage, or managinng communication with voucher or discount sites to drive volume to either hot products or those unsold in your warehouse.

The end of my session was advice and techniques to achieve buy in for the Creative Directors. I explained the story of how asseenonscreen.com or more commonly now known as ASOS.com built its business and brand via affiliate marketing and understanding the ways to build a similar brand with this channel and the reach affiliate marketing can generate to your site and company - with a great screenshot from Google Trends with visitor numbers from a popular voucher code site and a deptartment store not currently undertaking in affiliate marketing - the graph speaks for itself.

I hope you enjoy the virtual presentation, especially for those who could not attend A4Uexpo. Any questions or comments please feel free to add below and I'll reply.

A4Uexpo London 2008

Last week I attended the annual A4Uexpo in London hosted by Existem the creators of the popular affiliate community forum affiliates4U.com (formally a4uforum). This was a two day event with a vast host of influential affiliate speakers and from other online channels. The event was kicked off by affiliates4u founder, Matt Wood and keynote from Michael Nutley from NMA.

A4Uexpo London 2008

I managed to catch a couple of the presentations during the morning and afternoon in between publisher meetings. Keith Budden and Mark Russell hosted an interesting session on effective communication with your affiliate base which set the basics and common issues with driving your programme, some good affiliate tips and advice passed on.

The last session I managed to catch in the mid afternoon was an extreme SEO session. After spending 20minutes before this session with a true PPC expert, the session really delivered the key differences in natural search versus paid. Paid search is truly a science of mathematics – true and firm understand of the key metrics to drive the right amount of clicks at an acceptable ROI (return on investment) – it is pure data mining for guys who love excel and macros!
Extreme SEO session at A4Uexpo LONDON
Natural search you will find a far more creative search technician – Dave Naylor, Joost de Valk and Marcus Tandler (Mediadonis) made the hour session fly by with a plethora of hints and tips with an aggressive spin on the old black hat SEO ways to blacklist and decrease your competitors SEO rankings and also great discussion as ever on the means and ways on link building and link buying – from old school ethical sources to the bulk and the various text link brokers.

Chaotic but a truly great session, with plenty of value if you could keep up with the Kronenberg fueled banter and various ways to both upset and please Matt Cutts from Google!

Speaker Event - Securing buy in for your Affiliate Marketing programme
Earlier in the year I was approach by Matt Wood to speak at A4Uexpo with a twist on securing buy in for your Affiliate Marketing programme. Chaired by Daniel Powell (Head of Account Management, CJ), Chris King (Head of Affiliates, BT) and ran an hour presentation on securing that affiliate budget, aimed at advertisers and agency staff.
A4Uexpo - Affiliate Marketing Speaker Event
We pitched the talk on hitting each director within an organisation and the different tactics to make sure you can set up and run your programme but more importantly also ensure you can competitively scale the affiliate channel. Chris ran through pleasing the Sales & Marketing directors whilst my focus was more on guarantee both your Commercial Director and the Creative Director are happy and comfortable with the reach and branding of your business. I've just uploaded the how to get buy in for your affiliate programme here.

After the event we where whisked away for a cruise on the London Thames, with a 3 hour cruise on the Silver Sturgeon – this was a great networking exercise and I managed to catch up with various agencies, networks and affiliates.

Congratulations to Matt and the whole team behind A4Uexpo – a fantastic affiliate marketing event and great excuse to round up the most influential people in the industry over a two day period.

Affiliate podcast with affiliateblog.co.uk

Running around from meeting to meeting last month I recorded a podcast interview with Fraser Edwards from Affiliateblog.co.uk. Fraser’s had been trying to catch up with me for a while to discuss varying topics on affiliate marketing. My move to House of Fraser brought forward a fantastic opportunity to sit down and fix a time however with both our schedules and with one thing and another, this took nearly 5 months!

I’m happy to say my podcast is now live on affiliate blog, where I discuss with Fraser my background to affiliate marketing, how I’ve moved from publisher, to affiliate network and now advertisers formally with Hotel Chocolat and now House of Fraser.

Chris Bishop speaks to Fraser Edwards at Affiliateblog.co.uk

I tried to steer the podcast to affiliate marketing advice actually for the merchants but also a steer to affiliates themselves.

Again, you can find the podcast here – http://www.affiliateblog.co.uk/chris-bishop-house-of-fraser-podcast.html

Please add some comments on Fraser’s blog and I will go in and reply next week.

Thank you to Fraser for conducting the interview.
